KIWANIS NEWS KIWANIS WORK PARTY Last Tuesday night the members of. the Terrace Bay Kiwanis Club spent 3 hours at Terrace Beach in the first work party this year in order to clean up the beach, About thirty members formed into work parties raking up the beach, clearing driftwood, and generally getting it in shape for use of all concerned, The Kiwanis Club plan on more work parties at the beach this summer and it is also planned to invite the general public to participate in this worthwhile project. JIM TAYLOR SPEAKS TO KIWANIS CLUB On Tuesday June 8th the Kiwanis had as their speaker Jim Taylor, District Forester of the Geraldton Forestery District which includes Terrace Bay. Mr. Taylor delivered a most inter- esting talk on his department's activities. The Geraldton Forestery District for example comprises twelve million acres, The department obtains revenue from . timber cut in the District to the amount of 1 million three hundred thousand dollars or roughly ten per cent of the revenue for stumpage fees in the province. Mr. Taylor explained the District ranger set up in this Forestery District which includes the station at Pays Platt. He also stated that fires are the chief enemy of the Rangers, and that 85 per cent of forest fires are caused by care- lessness of the general public, Mr, Taylor stressed the necessity of obtaining Travel Permits to travel in the forests. They are free of charge and may be obtained without any red tape. The permits enable his department to know what people are in the bush and their whereabouts and it is a great aid in the prevention of fires.
