The Man BOARD OF HEALTH NEWS On February 3rd, the local Board of Health of the Improvement District of Terrace Bay received the annual report from Dr. M. McCausland, Medical Officer of Health, on the health and sanitary conditions in Terrase Bay during 1953. The Doctor reports as follows: "The health and sanitation record for the past year has been good except for an outbreak of Poleomyelitis, severe for a town of this size. This will be dealt with later in the report, Examination of new school children in both Grade Schools was carried out as in previous years. Visits were made also to the schools for the purpose of carrying on the immunization program, Routine examination of various grades by myself and the school nurse for infestation and septic throat conditions was done on several occasions. Immunization of the children of the community of pre-school age continued through- out the year with a total of 261 innocula- tions against diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus, as well as 50 vaccinations agai- nst small pox, 'There were no cases of the abeve diseases during the year. There were 5 cases of simple measles, 6 cases of mumps, and 66 cases of chicken- pox reported in 1953 and, as mentioned above, 7 eases of polio amongst our population plus (cont, on next col.) Page 3 BOARD OF HEALTH NEWS (cont.) one case in an adult from another community who was hospitalized here until the diag- nosis was established, Of the 7 cases, 6 were in children, the oldest being & years of age. Only one of the childhood cases was non--paralytic. It is interesting to note and highly Significant that in every case mentioned, contact with the disease had been established during a holiday trip or visit out of the community with one exception, in which a father contracted the disease from contact with his infected child. One is forced to conclude that children are safest at home during the polio season of Summer and Fail. The Public and Separate Schools were inspected and found to be in excellent Sanitary condition, The weekly inspection of bunkhouses, washrooms, dining hall and kitchen, food storage and refrigeration and dishwashing facilities was carried on throughout the year. Water samples have been submitted throughout the year and "A" reports received in eachease, Garbage and sewage disposal are satisfactory. During the summer months, the swimming area and the wading pool were inspected, A recommendation was made for treatment of the wading pool in an effort to keep it free from green algae and for more frequsnt cleansing, There were 88 live births during the year to Terrace Bay residents, 3 deaths, one of these maternal and one in infancy," The Board of Health members are C.E.
