LARGHST CIRCULATION IN TERRACE BaY IT wIGHT HAVE BEEN OTHERWISE Late last Saturday afternoon, an aeroplane circled low over Terrace Bay and for most of us its presence held no special significance. On a number of occasions during the past summer a plane has been used by staff photographer Arnold iantere to "shoot" aerial views of our project. At other times, routine flights have been made by sightseers in 9 plane temporarily , based at Walker's Lake, just west of Schreiber. But last Saturday, the plane in question, a Forestry plane, was performing a very important task. Tire had been sighted and we were being alerted to this fact. As the plano travelled cast it zoomed low over our Fire Hall. <A few moments later, travel- ling west, it again flew low, gunned the motor three times and kept going west. To those "in the know" this was a signal that FIRE had been sighted in the .direction which the plane took after the triple signal. Later reports revealed that three separate fires were burning: one in the Blue Jay Basin just north of Hydro Camp #1; a second near :-alcolm Spidell's Lower Drive Camp -just west of the Aguasabon River; and a third near Schreiber, Cntario. Fortunately all fires wore brought under control thanks to prompt action on the part of all concerned. It cannot be emphasized too strongly, however, that ANY ONE OF THE THRE PIRES COULD HAVE DEVELOPED INTO A CONFLAGRATION JHICH MIGHT HaVE HuD DEV..STATING EFFECTS. Because of the dry conditions in woodlands and forests this year, the Ontario Departiwcnt of Lands and Forests has seen fit to extend the Fire Season, in the Thunder Bay Region, until October 51st.
