Region allocated $350,000 for trails by Darren MacDonald Staff Lake Superior Snow Goers President Bob Jeffery says that $350,000 has been allocated for this region to help develop its snowmobile trails. The money is from the Snow-Trac program, a joint Ministry of Northern Develop- ment and Mines/Ministry of Tourism and Recreation pro- ject designed to create a sys- tem of linked trails across Northern Ontario. Schreiber and Terrace Bay fall into the newly-created Region 27, which runs from Marathon and Manitouwadge in the east, to Longlac in the north, and just past Thunder Bay in the West. For the year ending March 31, 1993, those areas have been allocated $30,000 to help update existing trails; $110,000 for new trails; $200,000 for trail groomers. In the following years, the funding increases consider- ably, and there is funding allo- cated for bridges. In 1993-94, the amount increases to a total of $825,000; in 1994-95, the total is $935,000; and in the program's last year, the total 4 is $2.11 million. "After the three years are up, there's no more money," says Jeffery. "The bottom line is if we don't get on the band- wagon, and if we don't get enough support, we'll end up with the same trails we've had for the last 30 years." The Snow-Trac fund will subsidize up to 50 per cent of the cost of purchasing trail groomers, and all other pro- jects up to 75 per cent. "But that doesn't necessari- ly mean we have to come up with 75 per cent of the money," says Jeffery. "It could include things like donated materials and equipment." A meeting scheduled for Nov. 11 in Terrace Bay will help clarify a lot of questions and concerns people have about the funding, says Jeffery. Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs President Don Lumely will be there. George Haney, General Man- ager of the Northwestern Ontario Snowmobile Clubs Trail Association, will also be at the meeting. "They'll be trying to get funding applications for differ- ent projects," says Jeffery. "And they'll also be announc- ing a director for this region." The local club has just about finished their trail through to the Santoy Lake area, he says. They have finished cutting through the Jackfish Hill, and "last weekend they began work on building a bridge across Dead Horse Creek. "We should be able to finish the bridge by next weekend," says Jeffery. "It depends on how much snow we get before then."
