Page. 3, Tuesday, Oct. 27,.1992, News New MOE charges may cost township $1,500 a year extra by Darren MacDonald Staff Schreiber Council is upset with the province's decision to start charging for tests done on the township's water. As of January 1, 1993, the Ontario Ministry of Environ- ment (MOE) plans to begin charging municipalities that use MOE's facilities to test their tap and and sewage water. According to a letter from MOE to the township, the average cost per sample will be around $7. "The compounding effects of the recession and the provincial deficit forecast for the fiscal year 1992-93 con- Strain the ability of Ministry to provide these services without some attendant cost recovery," Deputy Minister André Castel says in the letter. "The (proposed fees) are consistent with pricing prac- tices for water and sewage facilities currently in effect in many municipalities which operate their own facilities." Schreiber takes four sam- an additional cost of $1,456 a year for the township. "Sometimes they do sam- pling of the effluent at the Sewer Plant, or out of the lakes," says Township Clerk- Treasurer Aurel Gauthier. "They're bacteriological tests having to do with the water supply and the sewer system." MOE requires municipali- ties to have their water tested regularly. Samples from Schreiber currently go to an MOE lab in Thunder Bay, but. Gauthier says someday that may change. "The idea of a private lab may have to be looked at," he says. "But presently we're looking at trying to apply some pressure to have the charge relieved." Schreiber Council decided at its meeting last Tuesday night to introduce a resolution at the upcoming Northern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA). The resolution would call on the government to eliminate the charge. Robinsons set to close continued from page 1 downslide." He also says another reason for closing the store now is Robinsons' lease. "We're in an option year for signing a lease, and we had to make a decision," says Wotherspoon. "And the state of the economy means that it's just not feasible (for us) to keep the store open." Although the decision may seem sudden, he says that Woolworths examined the situ- ation over a long period of time before making the deci- sion. "Tt's not done overnight," he says. "Some people think that you decide it in a month, but it's done over a period of time, whether it's over the last year or last year and a half." In the end, Wotherspoon says sales simply didn't justify keeping the store open. "Don't read between the lines--it's strictly the econo- my," he says. "When the bot- tom line isn't there, you have to face it. That's how we made the decision." "It's quite depressing, but we'll try to carry on," says Nancy Burrows.
