District Manager Brent Wotherspoon broke the news to the staff last Tuesday evening at closing time, says Store Manager Nancy Burrows. "We found out at 5:30 pm last Tuesday," she says. '"' My district manager came down (from Winnipeg) and broke the news to us." Slumping sales and a contin- ued weak overall economy are the reasons why the company decided to close the store, says Burrows. "They said the sales are not here," she says. "And that we've been on a downward trend and they can't see it get- ting any better." "The decision was made because of the economy," says Robinson's Brent Wother- spoon, from his store in Win- nipeg. "And that relates back to whatever you want to look at, whether it's sales, bottom line operations--the economy is at the base of the company's deci- sion." Robinson's is owned by F.W. Woolworths, which operates stores like Robinson's across Canada. The store sells mainly lower-cost clothes and house- hold items. "A few other stores in Cana- da have been closed in the last little while," says Wother- spoon.
