Clean-up complete by Darren MacDonald Staff The clean-up of the zinc con- centrate that spilled into Lynn Lake near Schreiber was com- pleted early last week, says Minnova Mines spokesperson John Wilcox. The spill occurred Sept. 10 when a Trimac truck carrying 39.4 tonnes of concentrate over- turned shortly after leaving the mine. Emergency crews arrived soon after, and a boom was placed around the spill to keep the zinc in one place. An earth dam replaced the plastic boom, and the affected area was then vacuumed out, and the concentrate removed and taken back to the mine. Wilcox says the ore couldn't be reprocessed and was put into the mine's tailings pond. "T asked (Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs Presi- dent) Don Lumley about money for here, and he said they were kind of shocked to get it, and they didn't know how they are going to divide it up yet," says Bob Jeffery. Jeffery is the President of the Lake Superior Family Snowgo- ers Snowmobile Club, which was formed in Schreiber and Terrace Bay last year. Jeffery says there will be meetings held across the province over the next month to determine what Ontario's snowmobile clubs can expect in the way of funding for trails. The grant itself was announced Sept. 12, and falls under the jobsOntarioCapital program. It's intended to devel- Op a province-wide system of snowmobile trails, and is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs in the process. Ultimately, the program will create 3,700 kilometres of new trails and upgrade 4,000 kilometres of existing ones. When the program ends, there will be 11,000 kilometres of connected trails stretching across northern Ontario. "The only part (of northern Ontario) not'linked up with trails yet is the area between Thunder Bay and Marathon," says Jeffery. "Most of the trails down south are already done." Before the end of this winter, Jeffery says the Snowgoers Club hopes to have completed new trails leading to the Santoy Lake area. "We're probably going to go as far as Steel River this year on our own," says Jeffery. "We've got cutting permits and land use permits from the Min- istry of Natural Resources.
