Letter to the editor Reader doesn't agree with editor's views In the Sept. 8 issue of this paper, the editor published an editorial criticizing the Ontario Human Rights Commission for extending spousal and survivor benefits to partners of homo- sexuals. I do not choose to debate this particular issue. What I find far more dis- turbing are the editor's impli- cations that survivor and death benefits were and should only be for "non-working mothers." And that these benefits should not be extended to surviving spouses "who work." Does the widow or widower who works at minimum wage all day get denied those benefits (even though minimum wage is impossible to survive on), because they "work"? Does the editor exclude couples who cannot have children? This echoes an earlier edito- rial run a few weeks earlier whereby the editor implied that UIC should not be extended to anybody whose spouse "is already making a good wage." I work for my salary. I pay UIC from my salary. I pay taxes based on my salary. I have earned whatever benefits I.may reap from this, regardless of what my spouse earns. Would the editor extend this line of thinking to job appli- cants? "Your spouse makes a good wage, so you don't need this job?" Since women gener- ally earn 50 to 75 per cent less than men, will we be denied jobs merely because most of our male spouses earn more? Does the editor not realize that for most couples, two incomes are a necessity, not a luxury? As far as spousal and sur- vivor benefits go, in today's generally rampantly inflation- ary society, surviving spouses of both genders (not just non- working mothers) have every right to those benefits if their deceased spouses have paid into those plans through the course of their entire career. Meagre pensions are barely enough for most senior citizens to survive on now, never mind what the situation will be like 20 to 50 years in the future. While the editor professes to apply his philosophy to both partners in a marriage or rela- tionship, his line of thinking would still primarily condemn women to poverty. I thought that women were finally breaking free of the image of identity only in terms of being a "mother", "wife of . ..', and the image of success only in terms of what our hus- bands earn. Our -husbands, and we, deserve more respect. "One was a cub that was up a spruce tree on Laurier (Street in Terrace Bay)," he says. "And the other was a 120-pound bear that was chased around Simcoe Plaza by a group of children. He finally went up a tree as well." Although there are some berries in.the forest, Dennis says this year's crop is too little, too late. "TI think we're going to have continuing bear prob- lems until winter," he says.
