"That's the minimum number of bears I can account for now between Marathon and Schreiber," says Dennis. He also says that District Parks Superintendent Linda Horman has decided to pur- chase a bear trap for both Neys and Rainbow Falls Provincial Parks. That means that between Marathon and Schreiber, there are now six bears traps in use, compared with only one this time last year. continued on page 6 Clean-up operations next to the overturned transport at Lynn Lake last Thursday evening. by Darren MacDonald Staff A Trimac Transportation Services truck carrying 39.4 tonnes of zinc and a small amount of copper concentrate -- overturned late Thursday after- noon, spilling its contents into Lynn Lake, near Minnova Mine's operation at Winston Lake. The accident occurred at 4:10 pm, Sept. 10, when truck driver Ray Brooks met another vehicle while turning a comer near the lake's boat launch area. Brooks says he turned to avoid the other vehicle, but he turned too hard. "When you try to correct it, nine times out of 10 if you can get on it quick enough you're all right," Brooks said in an interview the next day. "But by the time I stepped on the gas, my back wheels were in the air, so I couldn't pull it around." When he tried to recover, his truck turned over, spilling the ore into the lake. Brooks then crawled out of his cab, and was taken to the McCausland Hospital, where he was treated for a separated collar bone and other minor injuries. Canadian Pacific has a con- tract with Trimac to transport ore from Minnova to the CP station in Schreiber. Shortly after the accident, emergency crews arrived and began efforts to contain the spill. CP provided a boom which was placed around the zinc, and the job of digging up the ore began. CP also provided a front end loader and brought its emergen- cy response vehicle in from Thunder Bay to monitor air quality. ""We responded to a request from our contractor to help them out," said CP's Mike Couse. "And we wanted to do it as quickly as possible to help ensure that everything is restored as quickly as possi- ble." "Once we made sure the driver was out and on his way, the next big thing was getting it cleaned up," said Minnova Mine Manager Tom Dickson. Shortly after arriving at the accident site, Minnova Media Relations Coordinator John Wilcox and Safety Training Coordinator Brian Gemmill went around the lake to inform cottagers of what was going on. The groups monitoring and/or involved with the clean- up include Minnova, Trimac, CP, the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE) and the Ministry of Natural Resources. MOE Environmental Officer Ron Campeau says that although Zinc is toxic to fish, there's no danger either to fish or to tap water in the lake. "T'd really like to stress that there's no danger to drinking water," he said. "I was hoping to discuss that with the people continued on page 7 = DIANNE O'NEILL TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD.
