The program is sponsored jointly by Canada Employment and Immigration, who pay the salaries, and the Ontario His- torical Society and the Multi- cultural History Society of Canada, who help pay for materials. "It's an audio visual display about how and when people came to this area," says Joan LeBlanc, who, along with Paula Goodwin and Hilda Hiebert, are working on the display. LeBlanc says they plan to construct a recreation of a tum of the century train station. The display will be built along a wall in the town hall, and will focus on the areas between Jackfish Lake and Pays Plat. oe ool ae IDS sith ee ANS nee es lal! pres ' es, YAM =a) rd SS twin AN OS FE \\ oS leet wt lie Waa wey eal weanerassll = *; 4 aicisS aes ~ a! The model train station will be about 14 feet long and 6 feet high, and will protrude about 18 inches from the wall. Inside it will consist of four windows, and inside of each window will be information about the cul- tures who founded our area. 66 Right now, we've narrowed it down to about eight ethnic groups?? "Right now, we've nar- rowed it down to about eight ethnic groups; and we're work- ing on what group should be in each window," say Leblanc. Items such as recipes, arti- cles clothing, old photographs and traditional songs are among the things they hope people will donate toward the display, she says. "But for something like a photo, people don't have to give them to us," she says. "We can make a copy of it." As well as a physical histo- , LeBlanc says- they will also be collecting oral histories. "We're compiling a list of people we want to interview, and Paula will be going out and tape recording their con- versations," says LeBlanc. "We're hoping that people will talk about their childhoods, and what it was like growing up in a particular culture." Eventually, she says those interviews will be transcribed to make up a written history of the area. Another wall will be used solely as a pictorial display of the area's history. "We hoping to make the dis- play a permanent part of the library," she says. The only thing up in the air at the moment is the future location of the library. LeBlanc says they hope to have the audio-visual display ready for the public to see by the end of November. This past summer, work was done on creating a numerical system for the Library's archival collections. Although the work is not yet completed, LeBlanc says that eventually people will be able to come into the library and easily access archival documents and information.
