Seagris lost a play-off in the same tourney last year. The Open celebrated its 25th anniversary with what Open Chairman Terry O'Neill described as one of the strongest fields ever. After the final round ended Sunday evening, four golfers were tied for top spot, each fin- ishing with a two-day total of 147. Jordan Young and Trevor Jones, both from Thunder Bay, were eliminated by one stroke after the first playoff hole. Richard. MacKay of Marathon was on the green after his second shot, but nar- rowly missed a putt that would have given him the title. Seagris, meanwhile, made a nice chip shot out of the rough on his second shot, landing the ball a couple of feet from the cup. Both men finished the hole with a four. Seagris also missed an ns Bill Seagris, right, accepts the Bill Hanley Memorial Trophy from Marlene Hanley, Bill's widow. opportunity to win the title, missing a putt from close in on the third hole when he was up.a stroke on MacKay. About 100 onlookers fol- lowed the golfers throughout the playoff, which ended on the fifth playoff hole. MacKay's first shot landed in the trees and he was unable to recover, giv- ing Seagris the win. "Losing the playoff last year was on my mind, especially on the third hole," he told the crowd as he accepted the Bill Hanley Memorial Trophy. Mar- lene Hanley, Bill's widow, pre- sented Seagris with the trophy. "Tt's a great pleasure to play in Terrace Bay, especially since I respect Kenny so much," said Seagris, in a reference to Ter- race Bay golfer Ken Hanley, who has won the open eight times. In addition to the trophy, Seagris also won a trip for two to Orlando, Florida. Low net winner was Bill Solly of Terrace bay, who won a trip for two to Las Vegas. Open organizers say they were pleased with the Open this year, and say that the feed- back from the 135 golfers who took part has been positive.
