"I'd be behind the altar doing communion, and I could feel snow coming down on my head," he laughs. "And the poor organist would freeze." Fundraising efforts to rebrick the church began in 1987, through the creation of the Geoff Birch Memorial Fund. "The money was raised right here in the community," says Bob Krause, Rector's Warden at the church. "The Anglican Church Women raised a lot of the money through catering that they did for banquets." The church was built-in 1885, but Elkin says the origi- nal building had to be torn down because it was impossi- ble to heat. "We have old record books that read 'The fire was lit on Friday, but on Sunday, it was still too cold for service," he says. The church was rebuilt in 1914, but wasn't bricked until 1916. "The Women's Auxiliary raised most of the money for the original bricking, and I think it cost about $2,000," says Elkin. "And I'm willing to wager that the bulk of this bricking is being paid for by the ladies as well. Without the ladies, there'd be no church." The rebricking is expected to cost $50,000. The original bricks didn't stand the test of time very well, says Elkin, "The baked surface wore off, and undemeath, they were powder," he says. tion is being pargeted.
