EAGER feels that more people in Schreiber may be willing to save their cans if there is a convenient drop-off for them to use. The ambulance garage is located downtown, next to the Schreiber Medical Centre, so it's an ideal spot. We're hoping that people will take advantage of this opportunity to reduce the waste that's sent to the landfill. All they have to do is rinse out their cans and, if they can, crush them. After the can day, the cans will be brought out to Minnova by volunteers. From there, it'll be picked up for use as scrap metal. Since there is no payment for recycling cans in Ontario, volunteers are needed to keep the service available. Some Community briefs compiled by Darren MacDonald local groups may become involved, but people interested in helping the environment are the core of this program. We're hoping to have a can day one Saturday a month, volunteers willing. EAGER would also like to share a few tips to help reduce garbage, as well as save money. From time to time, when space permits, these tips will be printed in The News. Instead of buying sand- wich bags, save the clear milk bags. They're an ideal size for sandwiches, and are quite thick, which makes them great freezer bags. Just cut the top open and give them a rinse. Reuse your produce bags from the grocery store. Either bring them with you the next time you shop, or use them at home. Save your bread bags too, along with the twist ties, to use the next time you bake bread, muffins or cookies. Put all of these bags in an empty kleenex box. It keeps them from cluttering your cup- board and dispenses them one at a time. Plastic covers with elastic around the edges are a great substitute for plastic wrap. They come in a variety of sizes to fit almost any cup, bowl or pan, and can be used over and over. Keep reusable containers on hand for the same uses. Many plastic storage contain- ers also double as microwave dishes and are perfect for send- ing a hot lunch. If you have any ideas that will help us help the environ- ment, we hope you will share them with us through The News.
