Page 5, News, Tuesday, June 23, 1992 Letters to the editor Handi-transit article could be misleading Information about fares con- tained in the news article 'Handi-transit bus fares to and from Rossport in limbo' (News, Tune 16) is misleading. The current fare of $5 for a disabled person of any age is correct, but if a disabled person requires an assistant, the assis- tant travels free.. A senior citizen who is not disabled does not need an assistant. A senior citizen who is not disabled might want to travel with a companion. If the companion is not a senior citi- zen, then the companion will pay $10. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation supplies a sub- stantial subsidy toward the cost of transporting disabled per- sons of any age, but there is no subsidy for senior citizens or non-disabled persons. When the feasibility study and recommendations to coun- cils were made by the Steering Committee for a Handi-transit bus system, the financial cli- mate was more favourable and there was hope that Rossport and Jackfish could find some funding for their shares of the costs. Therefore both committees were included in the projected service. It is regrettable that circumstances have changed and the service is not as helpful to these persons as originally anticipated. Shirley Mikus Disability Action Group Wardrope Park compared to the birth of a baby © My view of the future of Wardrope Park in Rossport is like that of the birth of a new baby. Being a mother of three, I know the joy of a new arrival. The new park we have planned for Rossport will be a great asset, not only for the res- idents but also to passing trav- ellers. The end result of our park plans will be attractive as well as inviting. Tourists who stop in the New Wardrope Park will not be sorry. When they leave, they will be leaving with a sense of tranquillity and also a great appreciation for the beauty of the North of Superior. * Lynn McGrath Rossport THE McCAUSLAND HOSPITAL The McCausland Hospital in Terrace Bay would like to advise the public that a mock fire drill involving the fire department will take place Wednesday, July 8, 1992. The key to the solving the case, says Dennis, was public cooperation. "This case never would have come to light without the public's help," he says. "And we're getting more and more of it every year. There's only two of us covering about 6,000 square miles of land, so if people don't talk to us, it makes it pretty tough." The MNR laid around 120 charges under the Game and Fish Act last year, says Den- nis, but only a small number of them go to court. If the offence isn't too seri- 'ous, the offenders can pay an out of court fine, comparable to a speeding ticket. To: #2 Shift, Woodhandling THANK YOU for making my retirement even better by presenting me with the new fishing equipment. Now the big one is not going to get away (I hope). I've enjoyed working with you people over the past years, but now it's time to relax and enjoy life. You are all welcome to stop in at "Golden Pond" for a visit anytime you're out that way. I would like also to thank all my other friends who helped me celebrate my retirement. (There are too many to name each individually) Thank you one and all.
