"We're having trouble find- ing tenants to rent the spaces," says reserve spokesperson John Bouchard. "It was supposed to open: this spring, but we have no ten- ants to go in there right now." The centre, which boasts 6,000 square feet of commer- ~eial-space, is eventually intend- ed to house a restaurant, a 24- hour gas station/convenience store, a laundromat, a craft store, and an arcade. The building itself was com- pleted early this year, and right now some additional landscap- ing is being completed outside the building. Funding for the centre came from a non- repayable loan from the federal government, a Business Devel- opment Loan secured by the Pays Plat Band, and from the band itself. Several calls to Pays Plat Chief Aime Bouchard and Pays Plat Economic Develop- ment Officer Anita Binguis from The Terrace Bay- Schreiber News were unre- tured. Terrace Bay A&W Business Centre closed centre in the first place, and who arranged the centre's funding, says that the people who planned to open business- _7es backed out when the time }| came to actually open up. "'What's holding it up is the people themselves," says | Nawagesic. "Pays Plat is quite | content in saying that it's a big change in a lot of their | lives--especially for the peo- ple who want to open up a business. And some of them weren't prepared." Rather than go outside of the reserve to find tenants, Nawagesic says the band decided to wait for people in Pays Plat to open the business- es themselves. "The idea of the business centre was to have the people in Pays Plat get the necessary training to start businesses," he says. "Rather than go outside (the reserve to find tenants), they decided to give it a couple of months and still have everyone in there who originally intend- ed to go in there. And I guess right now, they're waiting for somebody to make a move and go in, and then everybody else will open up." Once the centre is open, it is expected to bring about $50,000 of revenue a year to the reserve.
