Page 2, News, Tuesday, April 21, 1992 Community briefs New street sweeper for Terrace Bay Terrace Bay is purchasing a used street sweeper from a town in Manitoba at a cost of $45,000 plus taxes. The purchase was approved at the April 13 council meet- ing. Reeve Jim Ziegler said budgets restrictions prevent the township from buying a new sweeper. "With the one per cent increase we're getting from the provincial government, we just can't afford to buy a new one," Ziegler said. The FMC street sweeper is being purchased from the town of Selkirk, Manitoba, and is expected to arrive in about three weeks. It will replace the old sweeper, which is no longer operational. Council made the decision on the recommendation from Public Works employees who inspected a number of sweep- ers before recommending the FMC model as the best (The McCausland Hospital Board of ) Governors will hold their Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 1992. Emergency sled and trailer The Loyal Order of the Moose is planning to donate an sled and skiddoo trailer to be used in Schreiber and Ter- race Bay in emergencies. "It will be for the use of ambulances, the police, etc., in the event of an emergency," said OPP Sgt. Andy Templar. "It's not just for our use, compiled by Darren MacDonald it's for all emergency services. It just happens that they're going to store it over here (at the OPP station) because we have more room." Templar said the need for the sled and skiddoo trailer stems from the growing popu- larity of cross country ski trails and skiddoo trails. With more people travel- ling on the remote trails, police and ambulance services must be able to reach them in cases of emergency. The sled and skiddoo trailer should in use this coming fall, Templar said. Parks gear up for visitors Last year the Ministry of Natural Resources spent $10 million on provincial parks, in addition to work done to make parks more accessible to per- sons with physical disabilities. Wheelchair accessible trails were constructed at some sites, and comfort stations and park offices were renovated. Moore also said the commit- tee has identified possible recreational activities that the consultants can use for the study. "We basically outlined fish- ing, boating, cross country ski trails and snowmobile trails," he said. "But it's going to be the consultant's responsibility to come back and say what needs to be done to develop them, and whether or not it's feasible to develop them at all." he said. The first thing that may need to be done is a-clean-up of the wood debris that has accumulated in the river sys- tem over the years, Moore said. "Kimberly Clark used the river for the log haul, and they are involved in a clean-up of the system at the Longlac end," he said. Moore also said the consul- tant will examine ways to finance the project.
