If you have heard about "puppy mills", then you know the deplorable conditions these puppies come from. Many are left in small cages without food or water for days at a time; their parents are bred every six months and shot when they cannot be used anymore. Never buy a puppy from a pet store. Almost all of their puppies come from puppy mills and cost their owners a fortune in veterinarian bills. And every time you purchase a one of their puppies, you are condemning their parents to a life of misery. There are some basic ques- tions you must ask yourself t Talk A by Alice Scott before you buy a puppy: 1, are you willing to accept the responsibility of owning a. dog for as long as 14 years? 2. What size will your pup be? They only stay small for a short time, and a Great Dane doesn't fit in a small apart- ment when its fully grown. 3. How active is the breed of dog you have picked? Do you have the time to exercise a Labrador Retriever? Or would you be better off with a tiny breed that needs less exercise? 4. How much grooming will be required? Can you tol- erate dog hair in your house? 5. Do you have the time to devote to a dog's needs, or will your puppy be forgotten when it has grown?
