If the support comes, Lume- ly says the plan can be com- pleted within five years. If not, he said it will take seven. Trail development Quebec, Minnesota, Michi- gan and Wisconsin are areas known for their trails, Lumely said, and in order to compete with them, Ontario must have a competitive trail system. "People come to ride great, great distances," he said. NOSA has designed a plan it calls the Trans Ontario Provin- cial (TOP) Trail System, which outlines where trails should go. "Don't look at it and say 'Hey, there's not trail from Ter- race Bay to Marathon," he said. "The plan's not cast in stone." ~ NOSA is consulting local clubs to see what their trail needs are, Lumely said. "We know that changes to the (TOP) trail design are need- ed" he said. Tourist dollars Local clubs should not be opposed to the idea of tourists using their trails, Lumely said, for one reason: money. "The government will give you money to develop tourist trails," he said. "You want tourists so you can develop your trails." Nick Prebushewski, presi- dent of the Lake Superior Club, said he's impressed by what Lumely had to say. Trail groomer The local club plans to join NOSA, and sell the $55 trail permits required by NOSA. "We have a core member- ship of about 65," Prebushews- ki said. "The club is starting to come together now." The club is considering spending $55,000 on a trail groomer, he added. "You have to provide the product," he said. "The interest is there." Terrace Bay Tourism Direc- tor Susan Johnson said she was "very excited" about what Lumely had to say about the tourism potential of the trail plan. "We have to go slow," John- son said. "But what he said was motivating. We will be meeting with the local group (to discuss the trail plan)." The next meeting of the Lake Superior Family Snowgo- ers Snowmobile Association is scheduled for Nov. 7.
