Welcome Program involves parents -- in their children's education by Darren MacDonald The News A new parent/teacher initia- tive at St. Martin School in Ter- race Bay aims at maximizing parents' involvement in their children's schooling. "It involves them (parents) in the social and emotional side of their children's education," said St. Martin principal Diane Aitchison. Each class at the school has a "parent contact" whom teach- ers can contact when they want help in organizing extra-circu- lar activities. The activities can include fundraisers, helping out student council, or helping with spe- cial events, such as an upcom- ing Halloween dance on Oct. 26. The parents are kept informed about what's happen- ing at the school through a newsletter the school sends them. Aitchison said parents approached her in late August to see if she was interested in Starting the program. "I would've approached them if they hadn't approached me," said Aitchison, who has been involved with similar pro- grams in other schools. By spreading out the respon- sibility for the emotional and social development of the chil- dren to include parents, she said teachers will have more time to concentrate on the aca- demic side of education. Nancy Baxter, one of the parent contacts, said the pro- gram can help children build self esteem by having their par- ents directly involved in school activities. "It provides a little extra care for the kids," she said. "And I think it helps them to see other adults besides the teachers and their parents." Aitchison said she hopes to eventually expand the contacts to include senior citizens. "T think it would be good for the kids to have more contact with older people." NOT WEARING YOUR SEAT BELT?
