Blanche Speck, a resident of Birchwood Terrace, Jaime Glad, 8, Brittany Glad 5, along with Travel Counsellors Barb D'Amuro and Angela Prince, took scissors in hand to help open the new building. A good crowd gathered out- ---sidesthe new facility on Friday, August 30, to welcome Peter North, Ontario Minster of Tourism and Recreation, Shelly Martel, Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Gilles Pouliot, Lake Nipigon M.P.P. and Minister of Transport and Reg Belair, M.P. Cochrane- Superior, to the centre's offi- cial opening. Following O' Canada, sung by Kim Alexander, Terrace Bay Reeve Jim Ziegler intro- duced the the visitors. The building was then dedi- cated by Father Campbell and Reverend Tigani. During the ceremonies Councilor Mike King presented Keli Turpin with the Canada Day Youth Award. The tourist centre has been open to the public since May 27 and has had over 5,000 visi- tors. "That is one of the highest rates of any centre, especially an new centre," said Reeve Ziegler. Ziegler said that the business people he has spoken to have seen some increase of tourists. "And that does everybody good. Gilles Pouliot, Ontario Minister of Transport and Lake Nipigon M.P.P. presented several cheques totalling $18,737 to the Township of Terrace Bay on behalf Of Northern Develop- ment and Mines Minister Shelley Martel. The cheques were presented at the Aguasabon Golf Club during a luncheon fol- lowing the official opening of the Terrace Bay Tourist Information Centre on Friday August 30. A cheque for $ 9,375 was the first payment of a Northern Development and Mines Ministry grant of $18,750 towards a development study of Highway 17 corridor. The Township will have input into the engi- neering and construction of the highway in 1992-93. The study will look into lighting, traf- fic control, signage, landscaping, access, points Pouliot presents Terrace Bay Township with MNDM cheques of interest and design requirements. "The findings from the study will help Ter- race Bay's tourism strategy and waterfront development," Martel said. Funding is provided under MNDM's North- ern Community Economic Development Pro- gram. The total cost of the corridor study is $25,000. The second cheque was for $2,062, the first payment of a $4,125 grant from the ministry for the preparation of detailed maps of the Aguasabon Gorge. "I am pleased that my ministry could support this mapping project for the beautiful Aguasabon Gorge," Martel said.
