A crowd was gathered around a fire on the beach at approximately 1 a.m. when two officers from the Terrace Bay Police Service arrived. The officers issued wamings to those possessing alcohol. "In licu of charges we began to empty bottles," said P.C. Wes Fenton. Ages ranged from 14 - 35 The crowd of about 100 was made up of individuals ranging in age from 14 to 35, Fenton said. The situation had a different tone than usual, he added. For one thing becr caps were being thrown at the officers. However, when the officers, having issued their warnings, were about to leave the situa- tion changed. Tires slashed on police vehicle "We heard the 'whoosh' of tires going down," Fenton said. Somconc had slashed two front tires and one rear tire of the Police Services four wheel drive truck leaving the two officers unable to respond to any other calls. "That changed the tone of the enforcement," Fenton said. At this point most of the individuals on the beach began to clear the area, he said. With the two officers essen- tially stranded on the beach a third officer was called to bring the second police vehicle down. The OPP were called in for back-up and to assist in check- ing for impaired drivers leaving the area. Fire department called in The fire department was called to put out the fire. A tow truck was on hand in case the roadway had to be cleared to ensure access to the area. Several charges were laid for the illegal possession of alco- -hol and intoxication in a phe place. One individual has cake charged with causing a distur- bance and assaulting police. One resisting arrest charge and at least one impaired driv- ing charge have been laid. Sense of responsibility required "We know there will be par- tics," Fenton said, " but some sense of responsibility is need- ed." With onc fire truck, two fire- man and three police officers with only one vehicle, ticd up at the beach the safety of the whole town was put at risk, Fenton said. "It created a dangerous situa- tion in that the police could not respond to an emergency situa- tion elsewhere," he said.
