Summer is also a time of the year when students are looking for jobs. To bring the two together, the student and the potential employer, a Canada Employ- ment Centre for Students has been set up in the area. Jill Marcella, Student Place- ment Officer, held an open house last Thursday at the office in the Terrace Bay Recreation Centre. There is also an office in the Recreation Complex in Schreiber, which is open on Friday 8:30 - 4:30. The Terrace Bay Office is open Monday to Thursday 8:30 - 4:30. As part of her job Marcella will be visiting prospective employers encouraging them to bring their job requirements to the centre. The Employment Centre offers employers; free display of their job vacancies, informa- tion on wage levels, labour legislation and federal and provincial subsidy programs, and most importantly student workers on a full-time, part- time or casual basis(anything under 5 days). "I also screen the students before sending them to the prospective employer," Mar- cella said. This ensures the students applying for the position meet the requirements of the employer. Marcella encourages students to come in to the Cen- tre, register and have a look at the job board. "There's definitely work out there," she said. Currently there are 24 jobs open ranging from mainte= nance work to clerical jobs. The Centre has already placed about 20 students. Marcella will also assist students with resumes and provide advice on how to deal with an interview. People who need casual labour, work that can be done in one to five days, should also contact the Employment Cen- tre, Marcella said. It only looks easy The Ontario Provincial Police Golden Helmets Motorcycle Precision Team gave onlook- ers a great show in Schreiber on Tuesday evening, June 18. The team is made up of offi- cers on regular traffic control duties at Southern Ontario Detachments. The motorcycles used are Harley-Davidson Police Specials with 1,300 c.c. engines. Vanadalism threatened Schreiber water supply Vandals broke a chain at the Schreiber Water Supply Reser- voir, Cook Lake Dam on Tues- day, June 18, allowing them to operate the sluice gate. A press release issued by the Township of Schreiber said a rock jammed in the gate allow- ing water to by-pass the dam. Schreiber's water supply would have been threatened if the situation had gone uncor- rected, the release said. The Township was informed of the situation by an observant citizen. The problem was corrected Thursday morning but the inci- dent cost the the taxpayers of Schreiber approximately $1,000. In the release, the Township reminded people that tamper- ing with Township property can cause many different prob- lems. If individuals think some- thing is wrong call the Munici- pal Office so problems can be attended to by the Township's qualified personnel. The release also said that Schreiber has had problems with debris in the sewcr. Adults should tell children not to put anything into sewer manholes. Foreign objects can cause sewer backup which can have nasty consequences.
