N Volume 45 No. 24 Tuesday June 11, 1991 Birchwood Terrace workers certified as unit of UPIU Local 665 by Rob Cotton The News The workers at Birchwood Terrace senior citizens' home have been certified by the Ontario Labour Relations Board as a unit of United Paper Workers International Union Local 665. The workers have become the first health care group to be represented by the paper industry union in Canada. Staffing cuts totalling 22 per cent of the hours worked were recently made at the home. When the cutbacks were proposed the then non- union workers were upset with the way in which they were to be carried out. Mike Yakamovich, administrator of the home, has stated that the 22 per cent cutback in staff was necessary because of the reduction in the number of residents at the home. As a result of the cuts one part-time employee has been laid off and four other staff members have left. Two individuals left because they felt they would not be able to handle the work outlined in the new job description for the position, . said Adrienne Phillips, spokesperson for the non- management staff at Birchwood Terrace. One person left because she was moving out of town, Phillips continued, and another left because she would not re-apply, as requested by management, for a job she had been doing for ten years. Individual meetings between staff members and Mr. Yakamovich and Mr. Joubert were held on May 17, she said. "At that time we had to hand in applications that -had to be filled out or we would not have a position," she explained. The staff were not told until May 15 that they had to fill out applications for the positions, she added. Penguins photo by Rob Cotton Of the few precision motorcycle teams in the world, the Ontario Provincial Police Golden Helmets Motorcycle Precision Team is one of the very best and it will be performing in Schreiber at 6 p.m. on Tuesday June 18. The O.P.P. team is made up of officers on regular traffic patrol duties at Southern Ontario detachments. First formed in 1963 the team continues to thrill audiences at fairs, festivals and parades. The team is make up of 16 riders, the Ride Master, a commentator and _ one mechanic from Transport and Supply Branch. Each member must have successfully completed the three week O.P.P. motorcycle course and have a least one complete season on motorcycle patrol. They must be in good OPP motorcycle team coming to Schreiber physical condition and keep all equipment and uniforms in excellent condition. They are all volunteers. The motorcycles used by the Golden Helmets are Harley- Davidson Police Specials. They have 1,300 c.c. engines and weigh 800 lbs. Each motorcycle is equipped with electronic siren, O.P.P. radio and various emergency lights.
