Page 13, News, Tuesday, June 4, 1991 Time for another quiet revolution Continued from page 5 time you go to the voter booth you're confronted with the same parties, policies and, usually, representatives. So what are the alternatives? How can we ensure fairer representation? How can we ensure that each voter's preference will be considered? How can we ensure that Mulroney won't come back a third time? One method might be representation by population or direct representation. With this method the nation wide votes are tallied and the seats are allotted accordingly (if 40 per cent voted NDP they the NDP would get 40 per cent of the seats.) Granted, with Canada's diverse regional differences, a government based solely on this type of representation would not be completely feasible, but what about a hybrid system? If there are 264 seats, maybe half could be contested regionally and half directly. This way we could be assured of, for example, our Northern Ontario interests being represented and at the same time we could vote for a candidate from a much longer national list that might more accurately reflect our true individual political tastes (like the Green or Reform Party, the Rhinos" Or..- ¢ven- the Communists, just to name a few.) But, alas, it was never my intention to drudge out an alternative democratic political Provincial Parks open Dust off your tents and air out your sleeping bags! Neys Provincial Park, Rainbow Falls Provincial Park and Rossport Campground are open. Campers had to rough it for the first two weeks as there was be no running water and the comfort stations were closed until May 31. Visitors will see some improvements at the parks this year. Electrical hook-ups have been added to sixteen campsites at Rossport (olfelrelre Tpelfelfel re Oleelelelelelelelelelelrelelrely Peesererereaeeleleelelelelelelelrelpelrelfelelreltel PEPE reaeaae ts I would like to thank Dee and Rosaland | for having my wedding shower, and to everyone who donated baking and helped in any way. Rainbow Falls Provincial Park received $150,000 under the Ontario Government's anti- recession program to replace the water reservoir at Rainbow Falls and the pumphouse at Rossport Campground. "These facilities will improve the efficiency of the park operation", said Jim Chappel, District Parks Supervisor. And I doubt that if I did I would be taken very seriously anyway (actually, I'd probably be branded a heretic and burned at the stake by some status quo-preserving Royal Commission.) However, it seems quite obvious that our present system isn't all its cracked up to be. Perhaps its time for another 'quiet revolution'. Next year, when your in the voter's booth for our federal election staring down at the same three choices, pencil in the fourth box. Label it 'none of the above' and check it. Maybe, with a 'none of the above' majority, this country might finally get some quality leadership. SAAR AVOOR TERRACE DISTRICT OF THUNDER DAY HOME F.O. BOX 250. TERRACE BAY.
