" Pet Talk "Us by Alice Scott Having an overweight pet can cause psychological and physical stress to your animal. Your pets were not made to have a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise and proper diet help maintain optimum body weight, strengthen the cardio- vascular system, help reduce stress and anxiety and increase longevity. If you want to put Rover or Boots on an exercise and weight loss program, here are some important pointers. 1. Don't overdo it in the beginning. Simple walking is fine. Start off slowly, increas- ing the pace and distance every week. 2. Make sure you dog's nutritional intake is up to par. 3. Exercise, apart from reg- ular play, is not needed for puppies for the first few months. 4. Don't exercise your dog on a full-stomach. gastric tor- sion can be caused by exercis- ing on a full stomach. 5. Change your cat of dog to a lower calorie pet food. Ask the advice of your vet on what type of food they recom- mend. 6. Play with your cat by throwing his favourite toy or taking him on a harness out- doors.
