The suit is made of Kevlar, a lightweight yet strong material. Even so the suit weighs 70 lb. The person in the suit is linked by radio to team members. Macdougal demonstrated the bomb suit and the explosives disposal robot for the Police and Community Together (PACT) program held in Schreiber. Kidder, who came to Terrace Bay in the fall of 1987, said he made the move for financial and family reasons. "My wife, Pauline, and I will miss this community," he said. "I've really enjoyed my stay here and I've enjoyed the people." Kidder served as Chief of Police in Red Rock before coming to Terrace Bay. He started his police service in 1963 with the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force. "I had no desire at that time to become a policeman," he said, "but I was laid off from the mines in Sudbury." Laid off with nearly 5,000 other miners and unable to Support his family with part- time work and unemployment insurance, Kidder went down to Toronto to become a policeman. "After the first day I never wanted to go back," he said of police work. He described police work as the only job in the world where everything done helps another person. In Toronto, Kidder worked his way from the beat into the cruiser and from there into continued on page 9 Students speak out on the environment by Rob Cotton The News Students from the Terrace Bay Public School Grade 7 class brought their environmental concerns to Terrace Bay Council meeting, May 13 and suggested some solutions. "We are all here to make you more aware of the environmental problems that Terrace Bay faces," Carole Long, spokesperson for the class, told the Council. "AS citizens of this town we see pollution all around us and we would like to put a stop to it before it is too late," she said. Five students then spoke to council on issues of particular concern to them. Evan Grimm told the council that more garbage cans were needed and they should be more appealing than the present ones.
