"The additional $ 100,000 will enable the Business Development Centre to create more permanent long-term employment by offering additional investment funds to the private sector," said Minister of National Revenue, Otto Jelinek, who made the announcement on behalf of Employment and Immigration Minister Bernard Valcourt. The Business Development Centre has been very busy helping with new businesses and business expansions, said Mary Long, manager of the Centre. The Centre decided to apply for more investment funds because of the demand. "That demand showed the real entrepreneurial spirit of the community," Long said. The Superior North Business Development Centre, now in its third year, received $382,000 earlier this year from the Community Futures program for its investment fund and operating costs. Investment in _ small business from individuals, the banks, the Federal Business Development Bank and the Business Development Centre has been over $1 million since the Centre began and 45 new jobs have been created, Long said. The Centre provides 'fill-in funding' working with other lending institutions, she explained. "We help them create a business plan and will loan money only when they can't get it from other institutions," she said. The federal government's Community Futures program helps communities to identify, develop and 'implement measures that are designed to expand employment and help individuals adjust the economic environment they find themselves in. Speeding problem on Terrace Heights Drive by Rob Cotton The News Cars speeding down the long curving hill of Terrace Heights Drive has become a problem for Terrace Bay residents living in the area and they brought their concerns to the Council meeting on Monday, May 13. ' Beth Moffit, whose house was hit a month ago by a speeding car, and several other residents of Terrace Heights Drive presented a petition asking council to place three- way stop signs at intervals on Terrace Heights Drive. While working along the banks of the creek the students noticed a garbage bin, a bulldoze pile of assorted dirt and debris and a large snow dump. The interest and concern of the students of Schreiber Public School regarding the state of Schreiber Creek have led to several changes in activities along the creek.
