In this case it's Tomat's, Terrace Bay's newest restaurant situated, above the Terrace Bay Bakery on Simcoe Plaza. Denis and Sharon Gervais have always dreamed of owning their own business and now, with restuarant for Terrace Bay the help of the Superior North r Business Development Centre, & they have achieved their goal. Denis and Sharon Gervais, held the grand opening of their "Denis loves to cook and he new restaurant, Tomat's, last Friday in Terrace Bay has always wanted to own his own business," said Sharon Gervais. The restaurant is named after Denis. His nickname is Tomat because of his red hair, she explained. The cooking responsibilities are shared by Denis and Sharon but she is in charge in charge of the four new employees. They opened the arcade, Kings and Queens, last February and this fall began the renovations for the restaurant. Denis , with the help of friend Robert Boucher, did all of the renovations himself. In the fall of last year the Gervais approached Mary Long, general manager at the Superior North Business Development Centre, with their plan to start the restaurant. They had some capital and some access to capital but they needed some assistance in acquiring the necessary equipment. Long helped them to develop a proper business plan that would allow them to apply for loans. ; "A business plan includes a description of the business, the financial component of the business and the marketing and marketing strategy of the business," Long said. Marketing, Long said , is one of the key elements looked for in a business plan. "If you don't know who your customers are or what their spending habits are, how can you depend on your income projections." The .Development Centre helped the Gervais with a market survey and they were then able to project spending in the new restaurant. After subtracting operating costs from the projected income they were able to figure how much of a debt the business could carry for the purchase of equipment. When the opportunity came up to buy equipment from a restaurant that closed after 12 weeks the Gervais applied for a New Venture loan. "This loan is available for any new business in Ontario," Long said, "You have to go through a bank but the loan is guaranteed by the provincial Ministry of Technology and Trade." Still needin funds for renovations they applied for a loan from the Business Develop- . ment Centre. "They. now have two small loans with reasonable interest rates," Long said. They remained in exile until 1985. "When we lost democracy," she said, "we never thought we would be in this kind of situation. We never thought that social services would be cut off." It is necessary to be aware of the good conditions a society builds and not take them for granted, she explained. "It is so easy to cut social construction and so difficult to rebuild it." Undurraga was in Terrace Bay at the invitation of Development and. Peace (D&P), a Catholic international development organization, as part of its Share Lent 1991 program. Share Lent is the annual Canada-wide education and fundraising campaign of D&P. Marg Roberts of Terrace Bay, one of the local organizers, said money collected and sent to D&P is Canatlian policies do affect many developing countries used to help teach the people how to help themselves. Also present was Carl Hetu, animateur for D&P, Northern Ontario. He said one educational goal of D&P, is to raise awareness amongst Canadians and promote action. Canadians must understand that they can pressure their government to say things on the international scene that can prevent other countries from being oppressed by certain policies, he said. Undurraga agrees. "It is mecessary for Canadians to see what the consequences of their own policies are in_ other countries," she said. The program, which also ran the following Sunday, included a video about D&P 's three year campaign "Rebuilding the Americas" and a skit, starring members of the parish, about' the relationship between developing countries, the International Monetary Fund, trans-national corporations, Canadians and the Canadian Government. The skit was designed to help people gain a better understanding of the: debt crisis in Latin America. Resources. These schedules maintenance activities on each period for inspection: E.C.
