Neill also spoke to the issue of First Nation economic development in the Northwest. "We know the Native issues are taking a very predominate role in some. of the decisions being made for Crown land uses and development in Ontario," she said. "With that it becomes imperative that the business community participates, not necessarily in the negotiations but cettamly in. "the development." She described this develop- ment as one of the few areas of expansion and economic opportunity in Northwestern Ontario. The business community has a level of expertise that is needed in this area, she added. "The first step is to develop the partnership between Native and Non-native businesses - is to develop a level of awareness and education with both sides and to take that first step." The Aguasabon Chamber of Commerce, formed in 1987, has 55 members and was incorporated this past year. The Chamber hired summer students last year to help update the Business Directory and it is now in print: The students also helped the Chamber to set up the Telalert system amongst businesses in the community. New officers were also elected at the annual meeting: President, Leslie Dickson; Vice-president, Chuck Hutterli; Treasurer, Mary Long; Secretary, Susan Johnson; Directors, Mike Moore, Paul Paradis, Robert Cotton, Stan Spadoni, Dave Cringle. The Chamber also passed a motion to establish a $200 bursary for a student of Lake Superior High School who is pursuing post secondary education in business or entrepreneurship.
