CRTC Notice Canada Flex-heat system a potential fire hazard In the interest of public safety, Ontario Hydro's Electrical Inspectors are launching a campaign to contact about 600 households containing a 'Flex-Heat' heating system that is a potential fire hazard. There are 17 known homes with Flex- . Heat in Northwestern Ontario. Flex-Heat is an electric, radiant heating system that was installed in the ceilings of some homes during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The company responsible for the manufac- ture of this product is no longer in the business. Investigations into two fires last year concluded they were caused by Flex-Heat panel failures. These failures resulted in the creation of hot spots that ignited adjacent combustible materials. Last year s investigation also identified three other fires that had been caused by the same problems in the past 12 years. Although there may be no immediate danger, the owners or residents of the affected homes will be contacted by Ontario Hydro so arrangements can be made for an initial electrical inspection. The inspection will determine if Flex-Heat is still in place and being used, whether or not it is funetioning properly and what corrective measures need to be taken when a hazard exists. However, should anyone with a Flex-Heat system not be contacted, they are advised to call 1-800-465-3990. All Flex- Heat systems still in use should be examined. When the Flex-Heat systems were installed, warning tags were placed on the thermostat and a silver label was affixed to the service panel. Those people uncertain about the type of heating system they have are being advised to check these two places for evi- dence of the Flex-Heat system's existence or call the tele- phone number provided above.
