On the weekend of January 11-13, 1991, the Terrace Bay Ringette Association staged a 3 division tournament involving teams from Geraldton, Longlac, Thunder Bay, White River and Terrace Bay. In the Petite Division, involving 6 to 11 year old girls (and our first male competitor, young Jessie Witty from White River), the Longlac team prevailed over the White River team, 10-7, to win the Gold Medal. White River was awarded the Silver and Thunder Bay came away with the Bronze. The Thunder Bay Tweens, in the fourth minute of a sudden-death, five minute over- time period defeated the Longlac girls 8 to 7 to take the Gold, with the latter winning the Silver, and Terrace Bay the Bronze. In a hard-fought game that pitted long- time rivals Terrace Bay and Longlac against each other in a showdown for the Belle Division gold Medal, Terrace Bay's goal in the last seven seconds of regular time forced As fate would have it, Longlac won the coin toss for first possession of the ring in the overtime period. They capitalized on that advantage within seconds to score the winning goal, leaving Terrace Bay with the Silver Medal and lots of incentive to carry to Longlac's tournament in early March. In an earlier game, Thunder Bay defeated Geraldton for the Bronze Medal. As usual, Terrace Bay's Ringette Parents came through to assist Tournament officials with referreeing, timekeeping, billetting, and operation of Terrace Bay's trademark hospi- tality room for visiting players and parents. In addition, a number of parents braved the auditory onslaught of rap and roll to stage a dance at the Legion for the competitors. Our thanks, also, to Brian, Nancy, and Roz who did a great job of keeping the ice in shape; and to the Terrace Bay Figure Skating Club for allowing the Tournament to spill Curling playdowns The Terrace Bay Junior Men's team led by skip Scott Merkley took the the Zone 4 playdowns in Marathon to win a spot in the Northwestern Ontario Junior Men's District Playdowns to be held in Terrace Bay at the end of the month. Merkley, Mark Mannisto, Bill Hopper and Shane Jowitt beat Marathon, the only chal- lenger, in two games straight, 11-8 in the first and 13-6 in second. Marathon conceded after nine ends in the second game. Coach Heather Vandergraaf expressed pride in the way the boys played and behaved. "They stayed focused on their game and executed it with style." i- Tournamen The Junior Men's play- downs will include eight teams from Northwestern Ontario. The opening ceremonies will take place Thursday, January 31 at 1.30 p.m. and curling continue throughout the weekend. Men's Curling Terrace Bay's Men's Team, | Rick Hamilton, Steve Smith, Bob Roberts and Curtis Desrosiers, will represent Zone 4 at the Northwestern Ontario Labatt Tankard ply- downs beginning Jan.24, at Kakabeka Falls. The top three teams at Kakabeka Falls will advance to the Northern Ontario Playdowns to be held in Kenora Feb. 6-10. Two victories for Schreiber The atom minor champi- onship game of the Pepsi Cola Minor Hockey Tournament -went to Schreiber as Harry Tymko scored the deciding goal against Terrace Bay with only 26 seconds left in the third overtime period. Schreiber won the title with a 3-2 victory in the only game of the tournament to go into extra time. Scott McDonald of Terrace Bay was named top forward in the division, Tymko top defencman and Dalla McLeod of Schreiber top goalie. Schreiber took a second tournament victory in the novice final beating the Current River Comets 3-1.
