In a meeting held just before Christmas, Terrace Bay Town- ship Council voted, 3-2, against the proposal. Reeve Jim Ziegler and Councillor Bill Houston voted in favour and Councillors Mike King, John St Amand and Chris Joubert voted against. Mike King, said he thought the project was too expensive, over the time period, and that he wasn't convinced that the benefits would outweigh the. costs. "I don't think an economic development office is a bad idea," he said. "However," he continued, "even with the funding that we ~ were able to get and in trying to share the costs with Schreiber, Terrace Bay's share was still to much money." It would have cost about $650,000 to operate an economic development office in the two communities for five years. The Ontario Ministry of Mines and Northem Development would have paid 75 per cent of the salary of the economic development officer under the Municipal Economic Development Agency (MEDA) program. The municipalities would have been responsible for the remaining cost of $162,688. After five years, the communities would have had to carry all of the costs of - operating the office. According to the proposal turned down by Terrace Bay Council, Schreiber's share of the remaining cost would have _ Continued on page 2 Terrace Bay Post Office may close by Rob Cotton The News The Terrace Bay Post Office may close if the building is sold and Canada Post is unable to negotiate a new lease. The Post Office is a tenant in the building which is owned by Public Works Canada. Public Works has put the building up for sale as part of its program to dispose of many of its facilities. Lorne Hallgrimson, manager, rural retail network, Canada Post Corporation, in a letter to Terrace Bay Township Council, indicated that Canada Post is interested in maintaining a corporate presence in the community and in the building currently housing postal operations.
