Page 3, News, Tuesday, September 25, 1990 Former Schreiber resident still loves painting at 95 By Angie Saunders The News Otto Herriot Thompson, a for- mer resident of Schreiber, still loves painting at the age of 95. Mrs. Thompson, who now lives in Etobicoke, has paintings hanging all over the world. Her paintings hang in houses in Germany, Scotland, England, Portugal, United States, and of course Canada. Though she now supports her- self with a cane, it doesn't slow down her painting. Otto likes to work quickly. She feels the sub- ject and paints it. Otto received the International Woman of the Year Award (given by Creed's) in 1975 at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. One of her oils was judged best of show at the Kingsway Kiwanis Festival in 1979. Otto enjoys painting in oils the best. Flowers are favourite sub- ject as the color and beauty capti- vates her. Otto was born in Calumet, Quebec, but moved to Schreiber when her father's railroading job took the family westward. After taking nursing training in Thunder Bay, Otto married William (Archie) Herriot in 1919, which surprised many because he was a WWI double-amputee. The Herriots moved from Schreiber to New Toronto in 1937 for Archie's job. Unfortunately, Archie died in 1950. Otto was widowed a second time in 1976 after marrying Dr. James Thompson in 1953. "Because I grew up in Schreiber and it was my home for many years, I have that fond feel- ing for anything pertaining to that area. That prompted me to make a sketch from the picture on the front page of the Terrace Bay News of the wreckage of the Canadian, just east of Terrace Bay on April 29, 1965. The photo was taken by Jim McCuaig. My painting was accepted in a Juried Art Show held in Etobicoke City Hall." This letter, dated July 23, 1990, was written a few months after Otto's 95th birthday.
