A draft report has been prepared and will be reviewed at a public Meeting on Thursday, April Sth, 1990 at 7:00 p.m. in the Terrace Bay Recreation Centre. All Terrace Bay residents are invited to attend this meeting. 'he consultants preparing the Recreation Master Plan feel that Terrace Bay is well served with parks and recreation opportuni- ties. They note that the Recreation Complex is one of the best in the area and that the Rec Department and volunteers offer a wide range of programs. Input from the community supported this assessment. The study included a survey of community residents and of recreation and sports groups. While opportuni- ties to further improve the parks and recreation system were iden- tified, residents were generally satisfied with available services. One of the most significant issues that emerged from the community was the interest of an indoor pool. Over 20% of the people surveyed identified this as a facility that is needed in Terrace Bay. Unfortunately, the study concludes that the construction and operating costs of an indoor pool cannot be supported by Terrace Bay's population. The other major recreation facility issue that emerged from the study was a need for a community hall and multipurpose program area at the Rec complex. The Recreation Master Plan suggests options and costs for developing the hall. An important part of the study was an assessment of existing facilities and particularly the Rec Complex. A number of improve- ments were identified in the Master Plan. Very few of these improvements were required to correct serious problems. Most improvements dealt with improved operating procedures and building upgrades (e.g. estab- lish capital reserves for new arena floor, heating and ventilation upgrades, swimming pool repairs and energy saving strategies) or improvements to the service available to users (e.g. warm viewing at arena, new arena dressing rooms, washrooms in sauna area, new or improved playgrounds etc.) While the Master Plan indi- cates that the amount of parkland in Terrace Bay is adequate, the report recommends the parks be improved, better maintained and that new and improved play- ground equipment is improved. The Master Plan also supports the development of the Aguasabon beach and trails in the Aguasabon gorge. These projects were rec- ommended in the Waterfront Development Plan and Tourism Study recently completed by the Township. According to the consultants preparing the Master Plan there is little evidence to suggest Terrace Bay residents are restricted from Canada Post Dell Even if it does take 40 years! By Angie Saunders Could you imagine waiting 40 years for a postcard? We all com- plain that the postal service is slow at times but Mrs. Frances Campbell of Rossport was amazed when she received her mail postmarked July 9, 1950, forty years later. Mailed July 9,1950 Chuck Hutterli was remod- elling the old post office in Rossport when he came upon the postcard in February. He was removing a wall while renovating a rcom and found the card in behind. One explanation given was due to the way the mail was sort . Photo by Angie Saunders ed in 1950. When the mail arrived in mailbags, they were dumped out to be sorted. A card or letter could have missed the sorting box and landed on the floor, or in this case, behind the wall. The postcard was from Marion Jacobson of Chicago and was Received participating in desired leisure time activities because of the absence of programs. Consequently, the Master Plan does not recommend a significant expansion in leisure time pro- gramming. Mrs. Campbell was very sur- prised to receive the postcard but was amused that on February 27, after 40 years, she finally received it.
