Visions 2020 is a province- wide project undertaken by stu- dents to set up goals so that our environment and economy are the same, if not better, in the year 2020. Why look so far down the road? To be blunt - our environ- ment is in trouble. A long term view is necessary of the way we lead our lives and run our busi- nesses. A vision must be set up and we must spend our time over the next 30 years to achieve that vision. Where did Visions 2020 origi- nate? In 1983, the world commi- sion on environment and develop- ment was asked by the United Nations to examine the critical. aspects of environmental prob- lems facing the planet. In its report, Our Common Future, the Commision called for a new approach called "Sustainable Development". Sustainable Development is defined as a development which "ensures that the utilization of our resources and the environment today does not damage prospects for use by further generations. Why student input? In the year 2020, students will be the leaders of our communities and the par- ents of our grandchildren. A healthy planet is an important heritage to leave them. The class was given the topic of Atmosphere by the Network Co-ordinator. Our group was among 8 others schools in the province set up to deal with the problem of the atmosphere. Each group had to establish 3 goals which reflected the idea of "Sustainable Development". Five or six goals were established at first and over time and under the supervision of teachers Larry Fraser and Walter Klassen the class re-worked and refined their ideas until 3 polished goals were finally settled upon. These 3 goals were sent to the Network Co-ordinator, of the nine schools participating in the Atmosphere Project, Lake Superior High School was the only school to complete the assignment completcly. All of the goals were collated by the Network Co-ordinator and sent back to the participating schools. All schools were to choose 6 goals for the final report. A group called Public Focus will assemble the results from all networks which will make up the Visions 2020 report. As well as establishing goals, Our group sent in some art work (by Joanne Lalonde) and a sug- gested title for the report: No Eve of Destruction Here! The class was pleased with their results and efforts and were also pleased to be the Lake Superior Board of Education's Representative in the Visions 2020 Project. By Larry Fraser.
