Council decided to purchase the 1988 pickup which the town- ship has been leasing for the pub- lic works department. The truck is to be purchased from G. A $200 donations towards the purchase of the new CNIB eye van was approved by council. The van visits about 30 commu- nities in Northwestern Ontario each year. : A request for additional money by Cumming Cockburn Ltd., the firm which is conducting the' Waterfront Development Study, was denied by council. Cumming Cockburn Ltd. had requested an additional $5,000 to include certain items in the study. One of the components of the program is resource diversifica- tion and 'approved funding totals $500,000. Eligible activities include the harvesting, extraction, processing and marketing of natu- ral resources. Each project can obtain 75 per cent funding up to a maximum of $75,000 and either private sector individuals or cor- porations can apply. Dave Fulton will be meeting with department heads and staff to discuss possible designated smoking areas. Legislation passed by the government of Ontario requires most workplaces to establish rules concerning smok- ing in the workplace by Jan. 1, 1990. The area of space in which smoking will be permitted can be | no more than 25 per cent of the total floor area of a business. The tender of $12 per drive- way from C. Desrosiers received a call from the office of Thunder Bay-Nipigon MP Joe Comuzzi. His office is trying to arrange a meeting with Benoit Bouchard regarding the VIA Rail cutbacks. Council approved a motion authorizing Ziegler to attend a meeting of reeves, may- ors and MPs with the Federal Transport Minister in Ottawa regarding the cutbacks, at a date yet to be determined. Council was pleased to learn of the work which will take place on the Trans-Canada Highway between Nipigon.and Thunder Bay. The highway will be four- laned beginning in 1993. Some councillors expressed concern there may be no further repairs done on the road until the con- ' struction starts and they also HARE YOUR WEALTH Many of the churches of Schreiber and Terrace Bay, as well as the schools and other groups, are joining forces to collect food, toys and cash for the needy. IN SCHREIBER - Donations can be dropped off anytime at St. Johns Anglican Church or Rectory. Toys may also be dropped off at the Chimo Club. Final collection date is December 16/89. IN TERRACE BAY - Toys may be dropped off at ; the Terrace Bay Credit Union. (New or very good condition, only!) On Saturday, December 16, 1989 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, the Terrace Bay Fire Hall to receive donations of food, toys and cash. COME AND JOIN US AT THIS TIME FOR COFFEE AND DOUGHNUTS. Council also passed a motion requesting a meeting with Minister of Health Elinor Caplan regarding the issue of doctor recruitment and retention. The 1990-91 PRIDE applica- tion for funding in the amount of $53,500 was approved by coun- cil. work under the program dur- ing 1990-91 will cost a total of $107,000 with the municipality and province equally sharing the cost. In order of priority, here are the projects which have been applied for: 1. Highway 17 Pathway improvements, decorative light- ing, benches, picnic tables and garbage containers ($28,000) 2. Streetlight infilling ($20,000) 3. Simcoe Plaza sprinkler sys- tem ($9,000) 4. Simcoe Plaza picnic areas ($10,000), 5. Tourist signage ($10,000) 6. Simcoe Plaza decorative street lighting ($25,000) A sum of $5,000 has also been included for administration costs. Recreation Coordinator Dean Main made several reports to council. Main requested council authorize the upgrading of the telephone system at the rec centre and this proposal was approved. He also noted the bowling lanes have been certified for a period of one-year by the Bowling Proprietors Association of Ontario. Council donated a hydro pole to the residents of East Grove Crescent for the installation of lights for the skating rink. Flooding of the rinks was to be discussed between Main and Rolly Moquin. Council set the rental fee to be paid by the Terrace bay Curling Club at $7,085 for the 1989-90 curling season.
