Once again, the Ontario Provincial Police will be conduct- ing R.I.D.E. checks throughout the entire district. In addition to the full-time R.I.D.E. team, all detachments will be checking vehicles as well, often in conjunc- tion with other police forces. The {. stive season R.I.D.E. blitz will run from December 1, 1989 to January 2, 1990 inclusive. During the 1988/89 festive scason, 10,027 vchicles were cliecked resulting in the arrest of 2) impaired drivers, and issue of 47 twelve hour suspensions. It is hoped that all arca drivers will exercise extreme caution in kceping this Christmas a happy and safe Christmas. . It is anticipated that some 10,000 drivers will be checked by members of the OPP and at cer- tain locations with members of other police forces. Northern Breweries Ltd., of donated a number of "R.I.D.E." games, which will be given to a number of drivers who success- fully complete the R.I.D.E. check. , Each driver will receive an entry form, which, when complet- ed, will be entered into a draw. Four (4) persons will receive a complimentary copy of the R.I.D.E. game per week, for a total of 16. . The game will be distributed fairly throughout the Thunder Bay District. Business reports were given and Elaine Mannisto announced a cheque had been received from the C.W.L. The members of this group wished to share with DAG the proceeds of their bazaar. Members voted on a donation in memory of former member, Russ Stevens. Pat Merkley displayed the DAG Scrapbook and also spoke on her interview with "Rolling Thunder" when they were in Terrace Bay recently. This is a very unique group touring Canada and the United Stated who focus on abilitics, not dis- abilities. She found them a most admirable group despite disabili- tics. : Reporting for Handi-Transit, Shirley announced there was individual meetings coming up followed by a joint meeting later in the month. DAG will assist with the capital cost, setting side initial funding and will raise more moncy through fundraising. : Elaine Mannisto had complet- ed the E.M.O. list for the police and fire departments in Terrace Bay and Schreiber. The "Man in Socicty" class at the Terrace Bay Highschool Campus had completed their sur- vcy of the town's businesses and building accessibility. A copy of their report would be forthcom- ing. Jack Patterson mentioned the elementary school had now installed a new ramp, making this building accessible also. Shirley spoke on a meeting she had attended in Schreiber sponsored by the Ministry of Community and Social Services. This was one in a series of public mectings to determine the extent of the problems in this area. Shirley urged attendance at the next public meeting held Dec. 6 at the Terrace Bay Recreation Centre as it con- cerned integrated services for Northern children. Suggestions were for trained professionals in teams to travel the area to diag- nose and set-up treatments. Staff would include Physio and Occupational Therapy, Psychiatry and Speech Pathology for instance. Membcrs expressed the opin- ion Birchwood Terrace could be utilized to sct-up a centre for this area. In fact, members ques- tioned why Birchwood Terrace should not be utilized to its fullest extend, setting it up in a multi-functional manner, not only with seniors apartments, but also for Mental Health offices, Resource Centre, A.A. and Drug © Addiction and so on. The wiring has been checked out at Birchwood Terrace and passcd by the Fire Department. Members agreed to forego discussion on the Fashion Show until March. Due to the timing of the December meeting, DAG decid- ed to have their Christmas meet- ing and a party a week early, that is December 14 at 7 p.m. Members felt a $3 donation by each attending member be made to Doris Walton's Christmas collection for the needy rather than a gift exchange. Members will bring a tray of Christmas goodies for the party. Everyone welcome.
