Wednesday, November 1, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 9 Parents upset with son's paper route Dear Editor: Re: Discouraged Carriers Since this is a free country I feel entitled to express myself concerning the attitude of the Times News towards their carri- ers. When my son took over this paper route in Terrace Bay, he was told that for every new start on his route he would be entitled to participate in these "so-called" fun & fair contests that your PR. dept. has. So far, he has been totally discouraged, disgusted, and fed up by all the bull going on. First, he's told when he calls, that there are no contests that month and he'd have to start from scratch again for the next one. Now, today he finds out that not only has your office more than doubled his route without notifying us, and promised all the new customers delivery before 8:30 a.m., but that all his hard work and next to non-existing social life, that he still doesn't qualify for your "nice" contest. For a ten year old boy that was a pretty low blow. This kid has been up at 6:45 a.m. every morn- ing so he could get half the papers done before school (8:30 a.m.), so he'd still have time after school for the other half plus his school work plus his fricnds and mealtime, and you guys in the big city can just turn around and tell him he can't enter the contest. Now he's also taking flak from dissatisfied customers that aren't getting their paper at the Pet Talk: By Alice Scott Before I begin my topic for this week I'd like to tell. you about a new television show. If you're home on Thursdays at lunch, turn your channel selector to the Ontario Broadcasting channel, channel 9 in Schreiber. From this show "Dealing with Dogs", you will receive great tips on obedience training and general care for your dog. It also teaches you how to socialize your puppy and help them adjust to different situations they will encounter. In the past few weeks there have been accidents involving dogs and cars. These accidents can be prevented if certain pre- cautions are taken. In two of the incidents the owners ran over their own dogs. When you are exercising your dogs never let them run behind your car or truck. It is surprising how fast a dog can run, and many do not realize that the vehicle will hurt them. promised time. When he first started it was his choice when he was to pass the papers. My hus- band and I are trying very hard to instill in our three children the responsibilities that come with taking on various jobs or activi- ties. It's hard enough doing that, without having someone come along, promise all kinds of nice things for doing good work and turn around and pull this stunt off. I'm having a real hard time convincing my son he should keep up the good work and not quit yet, but it's getting hard. He'll grow up soon enough and © find out what it's really like to work for a living. I don't think he should have to face all the grown- up "bull" yet. Do you? If you're going to make this job fun and give these kids incen- tives to want to do it, then stand by them and be fair, or don't the kids from the sticks count as | humans? I'm not just speaking for myself and my family but for most of the parents and carriers from small towns. I'm not expecting a reply from you, but if you do have time to kill and want a laugh with your employces, please feel free to read it. Please remember these kids are getting pretty fed up at being used and fed empty promis- es. Yours truly, Lise Hnatuk An angry parent of a dis- gusted ten-year old. Instead teach your dog to heel and either run with him on lead or bike with him. When biking build your dog up gradually to the dis- tance you would like to travel. When hunting keep your dog in the truck not out looking for game. If you want him to flush game then get out of the truck and walk with him. Accidents do happen; dogs can break loose. Check your dog's chain or rope every week for breaks or wear. Even better - build them a dog run. Cover the top if they are jumpers. Place fencing on the bottom with gravel over it or patio blocks is a good idea to prevent digging. If your dog is hit by a car, get him to a vet immediately. Nothing is more painful to an ani- mal than a broken bone. Precaution is the answer so tie up your dogs. There arc too many animals killed each year. What's better for your dog "Broken Bones, Death" - being ticd, or put in his kennel? Think about it! Thank Uou for your energy, efforts and generous donation. S.P.S.
