Couple says their children's safety as well as others compromised Photo by Dave Chmara Parents fighting board over cancellation of bus service By Dave Chmara Although the Lake Superior Board of Education (LSBE) has thus far refused their request, Bill and Billie Jo Keating still plan to continue their fight to have bus service for their two children reinstated. The Keatings live on Lakeshore Road, just east of Rossport Provincial Campground and, just before the start of this school year, they were notified that bus service along their road would be discontinued. Because of this move, the Keating's children, three-year-old Jonathan, who attends junior kindergarten at Schreiber Public School, and six-year-old Tiffany, who attends grade one at the same school, are now forced to walk down Lakeshore Road and along Highway 17 to catch the bus everyday. In all, Jonathan walks 13.6 km each day, Tiffany walks 6.8 km, and the parents walk 20.4 km each day. For the past two years, the LSBE has provided transportation in the form of a mini-bus which picked up their children on Lakeshore Road. Although the Keatings have received no written explanation as to why the bus ser- vice was cancelled, Bill Keating said he was told the service is too expensive. The Realtors are the only family with school children on Lakeshore Road but Bill Keating said, "as a Canadian taxpayer I pay into the system. The benefits should be for all. They can take my money but I'm not getting the benefits." Billie Jo said she is concerned about the safety of her children and the safety of other children who ride the bus. She explained the bus stops on the part of the highway where there is a passing lane. In addition to this, there is a hill nearby and Billie Jo said transports are either speeding up to make the hill or going down the hill fast. Along with the traffic, there is the added problems of walking along the highway: in the dark and cold. Billie Jo said the LSBE policy for providing bus service states: We shall provide safe, essential and efficient transportation to stu- dents when warranted due to one or more of the following factors - 1) distance from school 2) traffic and safety hazards 3) special physical, mental or essential needs of children. Billie Jo said her children meet the first two qualifications, and, because of cold weather and the ones on page 9 Cc AL T/A y Public Library 40 cents Terrace Bay Ont Terrace Ba Box 369 POT 2Wo Fight leads to shooting By Dave Chmara Following a shooting incident at White Sand Lake last Wednesday, October 18, a Schreiber man was scnt to hospi- tal suffering from injuries he received after being shot in the back. - Onesime (Sam) Cloutier, 25, of Schreiber, was flown to Thunder Bay on Friday, October 20 to undergo surgery on the wounds he received after being shot with a 12 gauge shotgun.
