Wednesday, October 18, 1989 Homemakers help handi- capped and host of others To officially support the func- tion of the Red Cross Homemaker's Program, the Ontario Legislature has declared the week of October 15 to 21, 1989 as Visiting Homemakers Week. Ontario's 6,000 Homemakers will be given recognition during Visiting Homemakers Week, Homemakers services include everything from light housekeep- ing, laundry, and shopping to meal preparation, personal care and child care. Homemakers often provide their clients with important emo- tional support such as relief for care givers, or simply being an understanding and caring listener. They help clients by encourag- ing their participation in house- hold routines and by helping them cope with the stresses that often accompany debility. It's the giving, caring, and responsive attitude that make Homemakers special people. They -are women and men who help the elderly, handicapped and families during a medical crisis or chronic illness. The support is priceless as many clients can testify because the skilled Homemaker must tend to practical needs plus any emo- tional turmoil. Homemaker services have been available in Rossport, Schreiber and Terrace Bay for the past two years. During that time, the service has grown considerably with 12 homemakers working and helping out over 45 clients. Red Cross recruits, selects, trains and supervises Homemakers. As well, they co- ordinate services with organiza- tions that provide funding, such as the Thunder Bay Home Care Program, town offices, Department of Veterans' Affairs, the Canadian Cancer Society and family and children's services. This week is in honor of the many homemakers who give so much of themselves to so many people who dearly appreciate them. The Nip-Rock Lakers played the L.S.H.S. girls junior and senior basketball teams in N.S.S.S.A.A. action last Thursday. Nip-Rock defeated the junior girls 53-20 and the seniors by a score of 63-37.
