School crossing areas are not crosswalks Chief Don Kidder of the Terrace Bay Police has asked the News to bring to the attention of area residents that the areas which school crossing guards use to escort school children across the highway are not crosswalks. This means cars have the right of way and do not have to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross the highway except during times when crossing guards are work- ing. Pedestrians must wait for traf- fic to clear before proceeding to cross the highway. Kidder said if a person is crossing the highway and is struck by a vehicle, the pedestrian could be charged and the driver is not legally at fault.
