Wednesday, October 11, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 5 Getting VIA on track Continued from page 4 Also, there's the increased cost of having 2,700 people added to the unemployment list and add to this the loss in revenue many communities will feel due to the decrease in the number of people visiting their area. Then there are the intangibles - the costs that come along with no longer having a rail passenger service. Increased costs for alternative modes of transportation, the lack of choice. Once again the government has broken an election promise. Mulroney campaigned and boasted his government had opened routes which the Liberals before them had cut. Now, in a move that must be making Sir John A. Macdonald turning in his grave, Mulroney has made the largest cuts to rail passenger service in Canada's history. Although the government is elected to represent and respond to the needs and wants of the people, the Conservatives are ignoring Canadians. Anger and resentment are growing with the government's latest move and show no signs of subsiding. You can add your voice to this rising tide by writing your local politicians, MP and any government representative in the transportation industry. Names and addresses of those who could play a role in reversing the VIA Rail cutbacks follow. It may be too late to see rail service reestablished in this area. But then again, it may not be. If you don't make your voice heard, you'll never know. Complaining to neighbors may help alleviate some of your anger, but it won't do anything towards getting rail service in this area back on the tracks.
