The three-year accreditation is the longest term for which a hos- pital can receive accreditation and is granted to hospitals "that have above average compliance with standards in all areas of the hospi- McCausland was inspected last July 6 and 7 by Dr. Bernard Snell, a physician with the Children's Hospital of Edmonton. So far this year, Snell has _inspected six hospitals in Alberta and just prior to the McCausland inspection, Snell was in Nipigon examining the hospital in tha town, Every department and aspect of McCausland Hospital was checked including: goals, objec- tives and planning, administra- tion, medical services, nursing, plant and equipment services, ambulatory care services, x-ray services, emergency services, lab- oratories, pastoral care, patient and clinical records, therapy, dictary, housekeeping and person- nel. Lowes only sells produce that he grows himself at his orchards in Clarksburg, near Collingwood, Ontario. He said he sells more apples per capita in Terrace Bay than he does in Thunder Bay and has a lot of return cus- tomers. He's been in business for 12-years and if you missed him this time don't fret. This questionnaire covered questions related to the above listed departments which helped give Snell a profile of the health care facility. They have all been trained in accreditation proccdures and Fewer said the choice of who inspects a hospital is usually determined by availability. "A physician usually inspects a smaller hospital like ours because he's familiar with medicine and nursing procedures and has received training in the other areas. A larger hospital would probably have more people inspecting it - a doctor for medi- cal facilitics, a nurse for the nurs- ing department, an administrator for the administration department and someone from finance for that department," said Fewer. Snell's report was submitted to the CCHFA along with his rec- ommendations on how McCausland can improve its operation. The recommendations con- tained in the report were minor in nature, such as keeping a written record of the nursing departmen- t's mectings. McCausland is responding to these recommenda- tions with its report on how it will address these recommendations. Fewer said when it comes time for the accreditation, "it keeps everyone on their tocs." Commenting on the first time McCausland received a three- year accreditation, Fewer said, "it's not a matter of looking at what we did before, but of trying to sec what we're doing wrong or where we can improve."
