Wednesday, September 27, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Ringette is set The 1989/90 ringette season is tentatively slated to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 17. To date, 32 girls have signed up, including some newcomers. As in the past few years, there _will be four divisions: a combina- tion Bunny and Novice group for 6 to 9 year olds; a Petite division for 10 and 11 year olds; 12 and 13 year old Tweens; and a Belles group, likely comprised of both Juniors (14 and 15) and Belles (16 and 17) who will play similar combination teams from other towns. Sherry Jowitt is returning as head coach of the Petite team; Lynn Black will once again lead the Tween team; and Terry Edmonds will be back to coach the Junior/Belle team. We are currently on the look- out for a volunteer to coach the Bunny/Novice team with the assistance of last ycar's coach, Linda Falzetta. Registration night will be held in the Recreation Centre, in con- junction with the Hockey/Figure/Ringette Skate and Equipment Exchange, on Wednesday evening, Oct 4. The fee remains the same as in the past two years: $40 per player, or $60 per family. If a player has not been registered with us before, we require her OHIP num- ber and a photocopy of her birth certificate. Parents of returning players are asked to bring their daughter's birth certificate with them to registration, in case our photocopy has been misplaced. For those readers who are con- sidering registering their daugh- ter(s). for the first time - and we hope many of you are doing just that, especially those with Bunny or Novice age children - a few words about ringette. Ringette was first played in North Bay: 26 years ago and is akin to the floor hockey game that's played in gymnasiums with a leather-covered felt ring and a Straight stick. Ringette uses a flexible, hol- low rubber ring, and the sticks are specially tapered to make it possi- ble to "raise" the ring when mak- ing a shot. The sticks 'are colored white (used by the "centre"), blue (used by "forwards") and red (used by the defense), and are so- colored to aid referees in control- Do you know how to reduce the risk of getting AIDS? _ Practise safer sex. Forwards may not play in their own end; and defense may not play in the other team's end. Thus the number of players in an end can never number more than three defend- ing players and the goalie, and three offensive players.- This, coupled with the rule that the ring must be passed from one player to another over each blue line (unlike hockey, where the puck must cross first) results in a team style of play, in which the most valuable players are those who can set up plays and pass effectively. Breakaways are every bit as exciting as in hockey - just ask a ringette parent! Body contact is not a part of the game, but the girls are required to wear protective equip- ment just the same, including shin and knee pads, a girdle (with pelvic protector), elbow pads, a neck guard, and a CSA approved helmet and_ face _ shicld. Lightweight, "soft" shoulder pads are optional ("hard", hockey-style pads arc not allowed in Terrace Bay Ringette). As you have likely surmised, the emphasis in ringette is on team play and "sportsgalship". Terrace Bay teams have been rec- ognized for that aspect of their play many times in the past. We annually participate in weekend tournaments _ in Schreiber, Longlac, Geraldton and Thunder Bay, and enter tourna- ments in Marathon, Nakina and White River as the opportunities arise. The players are bused to all but the Thunder Bay, Schrciber and Marathon tournaments; par- ents handle the transportation for the latter three. Bay is more remembered for the team dips in motel hot tubs, and runs down the waterslide, than anything else! Our tournaments in Terrace Bay this season are tentatively scheduled for Jan. 12, 13, 14, 1990 (Tweens and Belles) and Feb. 23, 24, 25, 1990 (Novice and Petites).
