Thank you all Leonard & Lorraine Huard Canada needs more up-to-date medical facilities says runner By Dave Chmara Yet another long distance run- ner passed through Terrace Bay and Schreiber last week as part of a cross-Canada run in an effort to raise money for a good cause. Kartar Ahluwalia is the sole runner for the "Save our Future, Run for the Children" which began last March 4 in St. John's, Newfoundland. He estimates he will have travelled a total of 9,100 km when he completes the run in Vancouver, B.C. sometime in late November. Ahluwalia won three gold medals at the provincial level in his home country of India. Now, 25 years later at the age of 50, he is running 30 to 40 km every day. His goals include creating an awareness to the needs of chil- dren and their importance to the future of Canada. Moncy raised through his run will help fund state-of-the-art research and treat- ment of life-threatening disorders affecting children and to increase the availability of such treatment within Canada, through Children's Hospitals, Of the funds raised, 80 per cent of the net from each province will go back to the province from which the dona- tions were made. These funds will be donated to Children's Hospitals in each province. The remaining 20 per cent will be donated to organizations such as Save The Children. Fund of Canada which provides assistance for children in countries other than Canada. Kartar Ahluwalia is running across Canada in an effort to raise money towards fighting children's sickness. Photo by Dave Chmara While in Terrace Bay, Ahluwalia stayed overnight at the Norwood Motel and his accom- modations were paid for by the Lion's Club. Ahluwalia said with- out the support of corporate spon- sors, individuals and clubs such as the Lion's. Ahluwalia is himself a mem- ber of the Vancouver Renfrew Lion's Club of B.C. and said he tries to meet with other Lion's Club members in each town - although he admitted it's not always possible because the club does not hold meetings during the summer months. Paul Holc, the world's youngest heart transplant recipi- ent at 3 hours of age, helps give Ahluwalia inspiration. "If he can be saved, then oth- ers can too. But we need more up-to-date medical facilities in Canada," he said. "All Canadians are like one big family and we can become stronger if we help each other. We have to come forward and help the children and open our hearts and donate money to this worth- while cause," Ahluwalia said. To date, the run has raised over $500,000 not including donations by corporate sponsors.
