Page 2 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Wednesday, August 16, 1989 - Schreiber Council briefs month Seniors upset with lack of recognition during seniors By Dave Chmara Schreiber Council meeting began with an address by Ken Davis. Davis wanted to know why a letter sent to Schreiber Council June 12 about the month of June being Senior Citizen's Month, was never responded to. He said no reply, either verbal- ly or written had been received and also commented on the fact that Schreiber's Town Council has not recognized Senior Citizen's Month for the past three years. Davis, who is president of the Chimo Club, said he was making the address on behalf of all the seniors in Schreiber and not only those who are members of the Chimo Club. "When you sit back and think of all the contributions seniors have made to this community I think it deserves some sort of recognition," said Davis. During his address, he said, "we're not asking for freebies or anything like that. We just want some recognition." Council agreed that the seniors of Schreiber do deserve recogni- tion and mentioned that council had previously decided Reeve Mike Cosgrove would go to the Chimo Club to address the seniors as they thought this would be more personal than a letter. Apparently, this address never took place and because Cosgrove was absent from the council meeting, no direct explanation could be given as to why it hadn't been given. Council will address the issue when Cosgrove returns. Sergeant Andy Templar of the ~ Schreiber OPP addressed council giving a report for the month of July. A total of 74 occurrences took place during the month. Four break and enters took place in July with two of these Doug May Contracting NEW OWNER - Mark Valentino UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP!!! - Snow Removal - Demolition Work '- Gravel & Topsoil CALL: 824-2643 or 824-2826 having been cleared. A young offender has been charged. Two automobiles were stolen and both cases have been cleared with two young offenders being charged. Two cases of fraud involving cheques were reported and both have been cleared. CAP Program Pays off Templar reported one narcotics investigation has been cleared. He noted the person's name had been reported on the CAP (Community Against Pushers) line. Fourteen Liquor License Act charges were laid during July as were 51 Highway Traffic Act charges. Two of these were impaired driving charges and three were 12 hour suspensions. There were 11 motor vehicle accidents in July which resulted in two injurics. Templar said there was an 80 per cent clearance rate of occur- rences during July which is about 15 per cent above the regional and provincial average. He thanked council for the use of the town's fax machine. which provided useful information about a suspect that had escaped into the bush after flecing the scene of a stolen vehicle. Fire Chief Peter Doig reported four buildings were involved in an arson investigation. Three of these were derelict buildings. Doig said he wants the housing _standard by-law enforced so the buildings can be torn down so they don't present an eyesore or a hazard to people. Doig recommended the pur- chase of a fire truck and related equipment upon receiving all ten- ders. Council passed a motion to purchase the recommended truck, which will cost Schreiber just over $157,000. The truck was the lowest bid received by the town. Delivery of the truck is tenta- tively expected near the end of January, 1990. The town is still having diffi- culty finding a location for a holding pen for stray dogs. Apparently people are experienc- ing the NIMBY Syndrome (Not In My Back Yard). The priorizing of the sidewalks to be repaired this year has been completed and it seems Quebec street ranks first on the list. DAG (Disability Action Group) requested the town to look at the sidewalks by the Bay and Spadoni's to which council agreed. However, they noted these repairs would not take place this year as they are over budget for the sidewalk repairs already. He noted that the mine is an industrial site and it's not a fash- ion show so people, especially those planning. to take advantage of the underground tours, should John Smrke, superintendent of dress accordingly. The hoisting of ore began latc in 1986 and continued throughout 1987. Zinc is the main mineral mined at Minnova with about tcn times as much of it being mined as copper. Zinc is used-for such things as rust-proofing cars and galvaniz- ing metal and to a lesser degree in paint and ointments. Smrke mentioned Minnova is renowned for the high grade of zinc which is mined at the sitc. A total of 151 people are employed by Minnova which has a life expectancy of ten years. Smrke noted, however, that the ten year life expectancy is the same figure which was being used in 1985. He said since open- ing some smaller discoveries of zinc have occured. "We're optimistic we'll find "more which will add to the life of the mine," he said. . Minnova will be providing lunch and refreshments through- out the tour.
