Wednesday, August 2, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 9 Ata glance Radar detector. detectors If you're a speeder who has been using a radar detector to avoid being caught, your false sense of security could be coming toanend. | The Ontario Provincial Police will be the first police force in North America to operate radar detector detectors in an effort to deter speeding - one of the major causes of fatal motor vehicle accidents. A number of the devices have been purchased for the force's pilot project and will be distribut- ed to detachments throughout the province. Tested in the Sudbury area last year, the device identified 107 detectors during 61 hours of oper- ation. In the Oak Ridges area, 183 detectors were pinpointed Gangs a 62 hour period. In 1987 and 1988, officers seized more than.10,000 radar warning devices without the aid of the device. Mioose lottery The Ministry of Natural Resources has mailed 30,547 adult moose validation tags to hunters for the 1989 moose hunt. The annual draw for moose validation tags, a random draw which allows limited numbers of adult moose to be hunted, was held June 28. All of the 88,737 applicants who put their names in the 1989 draw were to have been notified about the results by the end of July. The draw is part of the MNR's selective harvest program, initiat- ed in 1983, to allow the moose population to rebuild. Successful applicants in the draw will be given validation tags which indicate they are lieengee to hunt adult moose. A total of 34,215 tags were available with the number of tags allocated in each of the manage- ment units determined by the moose population in the area. The demand for tags was lower in some units and as a result, 3,668 tags have not been allocated. During the second and third weeks of August, hunters who applied but were not suc- cessful in other management units will be given a chance to obtain one of these tags. The ministry will notify eligi- ble hunters by mail of the man- agement units where the remain- ing tags are available and how to apply for them. Hunters who do not receive a tag in the initial draw may still book a hunt through tourist outfit- ters who may have tags available. When the selective harvest program began, there were fewer than 80,000 moose in Ontario. There are now 120,000. The min- istry's goal is to increase the pop- ulation to 160,000 by the end of the-century. R.LD.E. this civic holiday Warm summer weather and the holiday season result in a dra- matic increase in traffic volume every year. The increased volume also leads to an increase in fatal motor vehicle accidents. Last summer, 363 people dicd in motor vehicle accidents in the areas of the province patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police. The major contributing factors in those accidents were excessive speed, alcohol and failure to wear seat belts. Approximately 25 per cent of motorists killed were ejected from their vehicles. This Civic Day weekend, Aug 5, 6, 7, OPP R.I.D.E. teams will be out in full force. The summer R.I.D.E. program, a cooperative effort involving police forces throughout the province, has already proven effective. This past Victoria Day weck- end, OPP R.I.D.E. units charged 147 people with alcohol-related offences. In addition, 269 received 12- hour suspensions. The OPP will be enforcing speeding, drinking/driving and seat belts laws this holiday weck- | end. SKYWIRE POWER SYSTEM SERVICES PAUL A.
