Wednesday, July 26, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Page 5 New community development worker for Terrace Ba Jan Mah (nee Janet Roffey) has returned to Schreiber after nearly 20 years, to work as Community Development Worker in the three communities (Rossport, Schreiber, Terrace Bay). She replaced Garry Turcotte and actually began work on May 1. Mah received her B.A. and H. B. S. W. Degrees from Lakehead University between 1985-88. dur- ing that time some of her particu- lar areas of study were: Rural Social work, research, Crisis Intervention, Social Services, Administration, Professional Communications, Social Policy and Native People as well as the Ojibwe Language. : Mah's real understanding (in a practical sense) of community Development comes from her experience as a child, growing up here, and as an adult. Living in many communities in the North, she has accompanied her husband of 10 years to teaching posts in Gull Bay, Grassy Narrows, and Heron bay. She has lived in White River, Manitouwadge and Thunder Bay. She realizes the extended useful- ness that formal training can have when combined with an under- standing of "practical ways" to apply it. In 1987, Mah, along with a co- worker, worked with teens in Manitouwadge for 10 weeks, resulting in them becoming so self-motivated that, on their own they took responsibility for plan- ning and organizing activitics for themselves which is still ongoing today. In 1988, Mah worked in Ogden School in Thunder Bay and was instrumental in engaging the community in taking on a Recreationist Wanted at Birchwood Terrace Temporary full-time position, Approximately 3 to 6 months Interested applicants contact Mina Mahoney at 825-3748 between 8 & 4 pm. Closing date Friday - noon, July 28/89 Thank You A special thank you to Cathryn, Tana, Amy, Lara and everyone else who helped in the preparation and organization of a lovely bridal shower. More recently, Mah worked in Heron Bay as Sexual Abuse worker/Social Team Coordinator Striving to empower the commu- nity citizens themselves to con- tribute to issues of abuse and to develop their own plan for pre- vention, intervention and educa- tion. It is Mah's goal, in the com- munities of Rossport, Schreiber and Terrace Bay, to use the old- fashioned, natural channels as much as possible in her work that will make people and groups rec- ognize the strengths they truly have. The strengths, shared, build a community. We have so much ARTA DS SSSR THANK YOu We would like to thank everyone for the beautiful Town Shower given in our honor. Let's proceed through a Community Development Process that helps us recognize them and make them work for us. Mah would like to hear from all those she left behind 20 years ago. She will be out and about the towns but please don't wait for her to approach you. There are so many people, you may have a long wait. Come up and say "hi". She's out there to meet people and find lots of good "natural" community developers. If you want to know more about what she does, give her a call at the office (824-2867) or drop in (across the corner from the Voyageur Restaurant in Schreiber). lO ilvedeaedaeddeeeereipedeipladeiper |. So many things we could have shared, Had you been here today. So many times we've needed you, So many times we've cried. If love could've saved you, You never would have died. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, The day you were called home. Thank you for the memories, That are yours and ours alone. For they recall so many special times, That you and us have known. If we could have a lifetime wish, A dream that would come true. We would pray to God with all our hearts, g For yesterday and you. We cannot bring the old days back, When we were all together, But loving thoughts and memories, Will live with us forever . Sadly misseed and never forgotten.
