TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Is Watering for the Birds? News Dear John: My wife's feathers are all ruffled because she thinks I don't water the lawn enough. Is there a cardinal rule for watering? Dear Robin: Last summer's drought showed the risk of play- ing chicken with your lawn. Reg- ular waterings are best. Although a lawn can handle an occasional drying out by going dormant, it's not a good idea to hold back on water--especially for two sum- mers in a row. You'll spare yourself a lot of problems if you water your lawn deeply but infrequently and only when it really needs it--about once a week. Light sprinklings can make your lawn a sitting © duck for shallow rooting. Lawns need about an inch of water per week, including rains. Keep an eagle eye on your lawn for signs of thirst like visible foot- prints or a bluish-green color. And remember, the early bird saves the lawn: Water in the morning to give grass a chance to dry before nightfall, prevent- ing a spread of disease organisms. Dear John: No one ever prom- ised me a rose garden, but I'd like to try growing one. How about some tips on planting and caring for them? Dear Ready for Roses: Few flowers compare to roses for beauty, fragrance and variety. Roses canbe bought from a garden center or mail-order com- pany either as dormant, bare-root plants or growing in containers. Dormant roses grow best when planted between late fall and early spring; containers can be planted year 'round but must be watered regularly if planted in hot weather. Choose strong, healthy plants with smooth, thick canes that are green or red. Look for a grading label of No. 1 or 14. Roses need five to six hours of direct sun every day. If possible, plant them in well-drained, loamy soil, or use an organic mix to improve your soil. Keep the plants out of strong, damaging winds. Dear John: I always seem to create ditches when I till my gar- den. What's the right way to till? Dear In a Rut: Start by set- ting the depth bar for a shallow cut to break ground crust. Leave a strip of untilled earth between passes. Till in a serpentine or "S" pattern to avoid creating ditches that can throw the tiller off bal- ance. Then, go back over the untilled areas to break the remaining crust. When the whole area has been broken, set the depth bar at 6-7 inches and till back and forth across the garden, then diago- nally from corner to corner. Be careful not to overtill; pulverized soil sets hard after a rain and can hamper seed growth. ~ Winner of Crimestopper Draw or << a ae "al "sean i ORWME .
