Wednesday, July 12, 1989 TERRACE BAY/SCHREIBER NEWS Building the Hall ontinued from page 2 ie bricks, hired a Mr. Green to build it and one of our members, lary Archambault was his helper. That chimney stood good 50 yme years. Our chairs were ostly donated to us from Eatons, impsons, Marshall Wells and the mainder we purchased and we yught a piano. During the years, ree sets of stage draw curtains ere made by the ladies. Dishes and other hardware ere donated by Wells- memerson Co. The silverware of setting for 65 people were pur- lased by the Institute. Towels, ble cloths, dish pans and cook- g utensils were all supplied by @ members. The churches, hool, sport such as hockey and iseball teams were given the hall ee to raise funds. When the teenagers reached xteen years they joined the orga- zation. Then came time when niors passed on, some married embers left the village to reside sewhere. One member joined e airforce till finally only five of ; were left but really only two of ; Mrs. Seppala and myself were ft to carry on the work. Some oved to Terrace Bay and chreiber and Thunder Bay. It wasn't the money angle that e disbanded as we had a sub- antial.bank account and we did not turn the hall over to the school but to the community as a recre- ation centre and formed a six - member committee to run the hall but with the stipulation that a W. I. member must be on this commit- tee. Our bank account was divided three ways and given to the churches and hall committee. Today, there are only three of ; the original members - all lifc members. They are Mrs. Anne Todesco, Mrs. Esther Birch and Mrs. Frances Campbell. We had no trouble to raise money but it was too much work for the two of us. I must not forget to mention that Captain Fred Gcrow always donated a load of three foot birch- wood to the hall for a large camp heater and the men of the village cut some of it up for the kitchen stove and piled it in the shed at the rear of the hall. In all the years that the W.I. owned the hall, they never had a chimney fire. Yes, if those 60 year old walls could only talk. We enjoyed the games of Keeno, later known as Bingo, whist, cribbage, five hun- dred and other entertainments. Something every week.
